Google sketchup is a free 3D program available from google. its great for designing 3d objects as it is free and easy to use. there are lots of tutorials on youtube too, if you need help with arrays etc..
heres a few locations that i am working on, you may want to use them if you are using them in your illustrations.

What programme would I use to download it and open it with? My Windows doesn't recognise it and I don't know what to search for.

windows should reconise it?try downloading direct off google, its a free program and it might have some further info.
