Payment Terms

Postby SimonMiles » Mon Dec 06, 2010 11:54 pm

Artists will not be paid per graphic upfront in full, we have set up a percentage and commission structure that will ensure you receive higher returns as follows;

Theme Decks
The first 16 starter decks will require about 20 illustration each. each deck will consist of one artist that will produce the full 20 illustrations by a given deadline. the theme illustrators will be picked from booster illustrators that show they can produce consistent quantity and quality of illustrations.

Booster Packs
Booster packs will be made up of more than one artist. Booster packs are paid £50 per A5 illustration. A total of 300 illustrations are needed for the first publication of booster packs (this figure may be increased).
£50 per piece of artwork will be paid to the artists once we have started to sell the booster packs of our initial print run which is 30,000 cards.but you will get a 10% of the payment upfront when we receive your completed illustration files. You can have this sent to you after each illustration or you can group several together and receive lump sums)

So if you produce 10 pieces of art you will have earned a total of £500. You will receive 10% (£50) once we receive all 10 illustrations. We will send you the remainder of the money we owe you as we start to sell our first batch of booster packs. We will start to pay the illustrators as soon as we start to sell booster packs. Because of the way the boosters are packaged and the way some illustrations are rare or common, we have decided to pay the illustrators in order of illustration count. this meens the illustrator that produces the most amount of illustration will be paid first until they are fully paid and then we will move to the illustrator with the second highest count. we think this will reward the illustrators that produce the most illustrations.

When the illustrator has been fully paid for it becomes the property of Conflicting Kingdoms and no further payments will be made and the artwork remains our property to use as we wish.

Once all the artwork is complete and we have accepted it as a Theme Deck Illustration or a Booster Card Illustration we will need you to provide the original artwork to us as the photoshop image with all layers and we will release the 10% upfront fee to you by check (possibly Paypal or bacs let us know what you would prefer)

When the artwork becomes our property we may alter it or use it in any way we need to but your name will always be used! (this means we may crop and/or desaturate the image to use for books, web, packaging etc...)

Each Starter Deck Illustrator will receive £1 every time a deck is sold that contains their artwork, although we may use the artwork for future reference in booster packs or Novels, you will not be paid any more than the deck cap sales.
Example: Artist completes a starter deck of 50 pieces that we have commissioned. The decks are printed and 500 decks are sold that week. This will result in the artist getting £250 for that week.
We put a cap on commission at £5,000 for the starter deck which is £100 per piece of A5 art. ( not bad eh? )
Each Theme Deck Illustrator will receive 50p every time a deck is sold that contains their artwork, although we may use the artwork for future reference in booster packs or Novels, you will not be paid any more than the deck cap sales.

The Booster Decks are a bit more difficult to work out as there will be no set amount per illustrator nor any conclusive deck as such so we will work out the payment on a percentage basis in relation to sales.

As business owners, Chris, Simon & I ( Stuart ) will get paid 50p per Starter Deck also but we will receive no payment from any of the booster illustrations on this first run as all the profit will be going towards paying our booster illustrators as soon as possible. This means the Starter deck Illustrators will be paid at a slower rate but we are paying them twice as much so this should balance its self out in terms of fairness. ( we may have to tweak this but we will make it as fair as possible).

We anticipate that the retail price for a deck will be about £10 and the trade price £6. This will leave a nice surplus to invest back in to the business for marketing the game etc.

I know its a risk to you guys but this game is unique, plays very well and is so versatile. Once it takes off there will be opportunities to undertake further commission work with further fees that we will hope to pay on a 100% upfront basis. ALL participating illustrators involved with us on this first set will be held favourable in our following endeavours.

Please post in the new members forum if you wish to participate.

The game is backed with funds, a hard working and loyal team with extensive business knowledge.

Would it be possible to get regular updates on how many of each deck is being sold so we, as illustrators, would know how much money we're potentially making? Also, I'm curious as to how the payment situation is going to be resolved if you're in the unique position of being both a booster deck illustrator as well as a theme deck illustrator. :\

Hi Jamie, here is how it will work:

The first ten theme artists will get paid 10% of revenue, this will be paid every £1000 which is £10 per artist. ( we are just short of this now, so a payment going out soon ) This seems the fairest way right now, When we release the second set Jamie, you'll be getting £10 for each deck.

The game is taking off, we got retailers on board, a lot positive reviews happening and im sure it wont be long before the sales hit the roof, also, we will stand by our promise of not taking a penny until all artists are paid...

All the other revenue is going back into the business, marketing, stock etc etc...

Cheers fella, hope you recovered from us crazy English!!!

Hah, believe me, you guys were the least of what drove me crazy on this trip. lol Those airports... Grrr...

So, basically, if you're one of the first ten theme deck artists, you will keep getting paid 10% of profits every £1000 in revenue. Then, when our other decks are released, we'll get paid £10 for each deck sold... Is that about right? I just want to be able to tell my parents when I'll be receiving profits. lol

I'm glad your business venture is paying off. Gives me hope for my own hopes and dreams of putting out my graphic novel some day. :)

not £10 for each deck sold jamie, £10 for every deck from each £1000 of sales.

its very dificult for us to track the percentage of each deck because we are selling some to the public at retail price, some are being sold to the actual retailer with a much smaller mark up and some are being given away to promote the product. until we get a large retailer on board we may not sell that many decks so dont expect the money to start rolling just yet. we do have the product but now we have to sell it and we still have a long way to got to get this on the large chain retail shelf. we are currently in talks with our printers about the next stage which is getting the product printed and boxed up as a stand alone game with 2 theme decks in each box set along with 2 miniatures, 2 dice, counters play mat and the comic books.

we are aiming to get the product on the shelf and to appeal to the casual gamer or as a christmas present. it would be nice to think we can get the first 2 box sets on the shelf for this christmas as then we can advertise all the currently available theme decks in these which will drive up sales massivley. until them we are hoping to get a steady stream of card sales from the online retailers who have already started to stock our product.

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. £10 per deck sold is ridiculous. lol Besides, it already says we'll get 50p per deck sold in your first post, so nevermind what I said earlier... I think I kind of get it now. Just a bit confusing.

yeah tell me about it. lol. i think when we get a big order it will be far easier to work out as it will be a simple case of percentages and a lump sum
